35th Crescent City Classic 10K, 2013 ~ New Orleans

I was riding a stationary bike like I might actually be going somewhere! On that day, however, I convinced my wife to go to a gym with me. We signed up for a free week, it was the first time I had been in a gym in my whole life. We made our way up to the treadmill area and I stepped on. “I’m going to jog.” I told her, and I did for 30 minutes. A runner was born!

A few months later on April 23, 2011 (the day before I would fly out to be married in Vermont) I ran my first race with a friend. HOOKED! We suffered the Crescent City Classic 10K and we lived to tell. Only I didn’t just live, I set a goal. The next year I wanted to beat my time. I thought Ree and I would run it the rest of our lives. Ree ran it the next year with me as did my bro-in-law-no-longer-but-still-we-love-each-other Gary, but I had a time goal and she had a different goal. We met up at the end. I beat my original time by more that ten minutes and instantly set a new goal. lol

This year Ree didn’t run with me (though my Gary did) and she was missed. We usually go to the expo together and get all hopped up on caffeine and anticipation. We usually stay up all night together and then drag ourselves out to the bus. This year I did the expo with my amazing life teammates, Lou ♥ and Mavis, darling! and while I missed Ree dearly I enjoyed sharing that with them.

I stayed up alone to prep myself and my stuff. I was up until 3 and then woken up at 4 by Gary, who also couldn’t sleep, texting me! lol

Gary picked me up and we coffee’d and delirium’ed together. We rode the bus, he on my lap, and then waited – freaking out – for the race to start.

All excited and about to burst as we wait!

This year the kids came with my wife and it was pretty awesome to have the whole family together at the end. My goal was to finish in an hour and, sadly, I completed the race at 01:00:49 – CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! The bummer is I know a few places where that was due to the new course and the way we ran it this year. That’s okay, though. I will find another race to focus on and my goal for the 36th CCC 10K is to complete it in 00:59:59 or less! God is good, it will be done!
