In the farthest corner of our back yard there is this pile of compost. To tell the true story it was a cute little wooden bin for the longest time, but as the weather shifts yet again and the grass grows so wild and free that within days it is obnoxiously long – well, the cute bin is over taken by the pile of clippings… Once upon a time, in a land before dogs and mysterious chicken death and generously placed fences which give ownership of half of the yard to our one remaining chicken, our chickens would scratch around in the pile and have great fun eating worms and beetles. The pile is now, for the most part, unexplored and undisturbed. I guess, in the end, that is what allowed this megula (in my mind that is a word that is like the rare combination of mega, ultimate, and fabulous – it’s pronounced: meg-you-la) mushroom to bloom and grow!!!

My wife alerted me to the existence of this dude by saying, “You should see the big mushroom in the compost.” Um, that seems to be an understatement. Apparently my Paisley found it and showed it to her, so the kids took a ruler out to measure it. When they came back in announcing that it was bigger than the ruler I took my camera out. lol Paisley was so proud of her mushroom she sat pretty for the picture!

BTW – how lovely would that mushroom cap be for a pizza crust! Yum!
