My wife and I after the 2014 Pride Relationship Blessing!

This year New Orleans Pride Family Day was held at Duncan Plaza which is located directly in front of our City Hall. It’s a pretty park and while there was some hesitation it was a clean and friendly environment. I was unhappy with the layout because the stage was, in effect, separated from the booths by the teeny (yet beautiful) hills in the park. There was also a lack of kiddo attractions, which was okay because there was a lack of kiddos – but, honestly I would like to see family day not just be about us – the LBGT community – but about our families, our entire families… Kids and grandparents and, I would like to see a lot more PFLAG – which there was, but more so it was just us… Anyway, in spite of my disappointment there was something magical about being AT City Hall. Like, we will be seen – heard – recognized.

Last year was the first time I had ever been to a Pride event. I had my own ideas of what it was and what went on – yep, even I – an openly VERY homosexual lesbian – was guilty of passing judgment on my own community. (I think that speaks for how ingrained into our society that judgment is, I often realize that when I realize that I sometimes value myself less because I am gay. That is a whole different post and an attitude that has changed – thank you very much!) Back to THIS point – I went to my first Pride event with my church and it was fantastic. Last year I was just a volunteer, though a busy one, but this year I was involved from the beginning.

There was a committee of – I think – six people, however I worked most closely with my friend Kellie. I think it’s pretty amazing when God makes connections in your life. Kellie is one of those. I knew that I enjoyed her company, we have had several interactions that had let me know that we kind of see things from a similar view and handle conflict in a similar way – but I was BLOWN AWAY with the way that we worked together on this project. So much so that despite the rough patches I can’t wait to work with her again! lol

A lot of the time I felt like I was driving without a map, but God is the best GPS in the world and the booth and decor and EVERYTHING really came together.

We had a wonderful placement once again this year and we were blessed to be near both of our neighbors from last Pride! My FAV (you know, aside from our booth) is NOLA Snow Snoballs! So amazing!4 pride neighbor

This year was also different due to the fact that we started the day with an amazing interfaith service! I loved it. While our pastors were not there our church was represented buy Aggie, Kellie, Desiree and myself. I read John 7:38-39 “38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”[a] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” As we represented the color BLUE.

Pastor Lee & Pastor Yolande

Our pastors and church family showed up, as they always do, to represent – connect- minister – and enjoy each other!

This year our church and pastors continued the tradition of a giant relationship blessing! We handed out roses and we took photos of the couples after. It was a really lovely thing, as it always is when you witness such awesome love. Some of those couples broke my heart they way they looked into each others eyes and took those blessing “vows” – LOVELY!

Probably my favorite photo and I wasn't even aware that it was taken - thank YOU so much Kellie!!!
